 Bamboo

Bamboo is also known as “vegetable steel” due to its strength and extreme lightness.
Craftsmen, architects, engineers, designers and distributors from around the world have collaborated in this selection of fifty constructions and over sixty product designs. All are made from this natural material that enables a new form of sustainable construction and boasts many advantages: as light and durable as carbon fibre, made of resistant fibres, and during its growth bamboo absorbs massive amounts of CO2 while releasing 35% more oxygen than other similarly-sized trees..

Living with Wood

Wood, like stone, is a building material that has been used throughout human history. Western imagery, heir to that of Greece and Rome, has tended to revere stone as a mark of nobility and civilization. However, the relevance of stone in the history of mankind is not comparable to that of wood. Only a material as light, accessible, durable, malleable and permeable as wood could provide a structural solution so permanent, affordable and universal.

The new architecture, in an attempt to reconcile buildings with nature and tradition, claims wood as a material capable of meeting all the requirements of sustainability, versatility and human scale. Technological innovations have helped to rescue wood from obsolescence, rehabilitating it as a structural element or as siding, and returning it to the place it once occupied in towns and cities.

Living with Stone

The vast majority of the project in this book are stone-built houses designed to comply with their owners' requirements to have aresidence away from the noise, pollution and stress of the big city.

This book offers a broad and comprehensive catalog of contemporary uses of natural stone in private homes, public buildings, and public spaces, with particular emphasis on both traditional and modern applications.

Ecological Inspirations

Eco awareness is a clear reflection of the change in paradigm supporting architecture and which can be seen in different sectors of society. Building without a thought for the local setting, using materials that do not respect the natural environment, abusing the sources of traditional energies, are all approaches that belong to the past. Nowadays, more importance is given to the strategies used to conserve the environment and the life cycle of the buildings, and minimize the impact of the building on the ecosystem.

If the façades and roof gardens, reused water tanks, the positioning of the buildings depending on the currents of air and the conservation of energies are taken into account as references of eco solutions, it can be seen that in the architectural projects of this century, there is a determination to implement these eco paradigms. Adapting to one’s environment, and not the other way around, is an example of how architecture starts out with eco criteria to implement its projections.
