Fissured cliffs, with inviting bays and bizarre rock formations characterize the face of Portugal in the Algarve. On the west coast these merge into landscapes dominated by dunes, often featuring wide sandy beaches, and where the surf of the temperamental Atlantic Ocean guarantees a spectacular show. The Alentejo is much gentler, with its hilltops dominated by ancient villages of whitewashed houses. In the centre of the country, the proud city of Lisbon sets the tone. The venerable capital combines majestic squares, sublime city palaces and bold funiculars with the melancholy of fado music and the modernity of a metropolis.

Further north, following a dramatic journey through terraced vineyards, Portugal’s most important river flows into the Atlantic: the Douro. At the river’s mouth sits Porto, the eternal rival of the capital. The country’s second largest city is colourful, lively and pleasure-loving, spoiling its visitors with port wine, fresh fish and relaxed seaside resorts. To the north is the land of the famous Vinho Verde, but the borderland to Galicia can also charm, with enchanting towns such as Viana do Castelo or Braga. Roman settlements such as Ponte de Lima, along with the rugged mountains of the Peneda-Gerês National Park further increase the diversity. What remains are the islands in the Atlantic: the ‘flower island’ of Madeira and, in the middle of the ocean, the enigmatic Azores. Great material for a voyage of discovery in pictures.
