The Museo del Prado not only houses the largest collection of Spanish painting spanning the 15th century to the 19th century, but also represents an entire history of the classical art of western Europe-the exquisite treasures of the royal collections, featuring a wide variety of masters, regions, styles and genres.

The Museo del Prado in Madrid numbers amongst the world’s largest museums, housing 8,000 paintings, 5,000 drawings, 2,000 prints, 700 sculptures and 2,000 other works of art. There is no equivalent collection of classical Spanish painting, and the masterpieces originating from other countries are internationally renowned — creations which shaped Western art history. These include panel paintings of the Northern Renaissance, paintings of the Flemish Baroque and Italian masterpieces from the 15th to the 18th centuries, as well as French or Netherlandish classics — all collected and organized, exhibited and treasured over the centuries.

Today’s museum has evolved through a long history of development and accumulation. The collection is founded upon works of art from royal collections and from the ecclesiastical heritage, as well as including more modern acquisitions, which have come through inheritances, donations, foundations and purchases. The collection has expanded over the centuries, partly arbitrarily and partly systematically. This was often dependent upon the preferences of the king, or more often the queen, as different artists, epochs, styles and regions were appreciated. Gaps in the development of art history were filled, with epochs and thematic areas being complemented.
